Ilkka Herola, an athlete in Nordic combined is a candidate for the International Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission. The role of the Athletes’ Commission is to ensure that athletes’ voices are heard in decision-making.
As a three-time Olympian, Herola has grown from a young talented athlete to an experienced professional athlete. The overall well-being of athletes — the ‘Winning Well’ mindset is close to his heart.
– A true victory goes beyond medals. Sport should be safe, inclusive, and empowering, helping athletes to grow as individuals, Herola summarizes.
Moreover, Herola highlights the importance of protecting winters through climate action.
– Without snowy winters, there is no winter sport. Suitable venues are becoming scarce as it gets harder to find proper weather conditions. More important than competitions, is the condition of our planet. It is the responsibility of decision-makers, as well as us all, to take actions that slow down climate change, and I want to contribute to these solutions. Winning the race against the climate change is a game we all must win – on and off the field.
In addition, as an active athlete, Herola wants to emphasize that it is an athlete’s responsibility to act with honesty and respect for the rules — in everything they do.
– Sport is built on honesty, integrity, and respect. This should be the base for decision and actions alike. Competing fairly, respecting opponents, and upholding the rules are not just obligations – they define what it means to be an athlete.
President of the Finnish Olympic Committee, Mr. Petteri Kilpinen is delighted about Herola’s candidacy.
– Ilkka is an excellent athlete role model, determined and positive personality. He’s not afraid to speak up, and at the same time, he genuinely wants to take action when challenges are brought up.
One era at the IOC’s Athletes’ Commission will come to an end when the current Chair of the Commission, Finnish Ms. Emma Terho will conclude her term at the Milano-Cortina Winter Games.
– Emma has done incredible work on the Athletes’ Commission, actively engaging with athletes across the globe and ensuring that the voices of global athletes are heard at the IOC’s decision making. I hope that Ilkka will have the opportunity to continue this important work,” says Kilpinen.
The Athlete Commission representatives will be elected during the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympic Games, 6-22 February 2026.
