SporttiData

Finnish sports in numbers

Welcome to explore the SporttiData report

SporttiData is a public report produced by the Finnish Olympic Committee, compiling statistical data on the Finnish sports sector.

The first SporttiData report was published in April 2025. Going forward, the Finnish Olympic Committee will further develop the report so that it can be updated regularly and automatically with data from as many sources as possible.

Data sources used

Data sources used in the first SporttiData report:

  • Suomisport
  • Pelipaikka (Football Association of Finland)
  • Hoika (Figure Skating and Gymnastics Federation)
  • eBirdie (Finnish Golf Association)
  • Sense (Basketball Finland)
  • Statistics Finland: stat.fi open data and company information service (paid data)
  • Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) – Sotkanet interface
  • LIPAS – Sports facility construction database (University of Jyväskylä)

Questions and answers

SporttiData is mainly based on data available from Suomisport. In addition, a few sports were included in the report on a trial basis. The main challenge lies in ensuring the comparability of different data sources as well as in identifying and combining individuals across different systems.

For the sports included in the report, the results are highly relevant. However, SporttiData does not cover all sports.

The report is intended to be developed into a regularly and automatically updated resource, supplemented and improved as needed. The updated report will always be available through the same link.

The report page and link are publicly accessible, and federations and clubs can make use of the report whenever they wish.

The more federations and clubs use Suomisport, the broader and more complete the information we have on Finnish sport.

In the report, we have examined sports clubs based on a specific definition, focusing on those that are economically active, combined with the industry classification (TOL2008) “93120 Sports club activities.” The data is based on Statistics Finland’s Business and Community Information Service, which compiles information from official registers. In our view, this theme requires further study and examination based on the findings.

As part of the Suomisport agreements, there is a data processing agreement that defines how Suomisport data may be used as data outputs. With sports federations outside Suomisport, separate data disclosure agreements have been made, which authorize the Finnish Olympic Committee to publish these data outputs.

  • We recognize the differing licensing practices of the sports federations. In particular, there are differences between sports and federations regarding the time periods of license seasons and the types of licenses.
  • In the SporttiData report, the calendar year has been chosen as the observation period for license acquisitions. In addition, the analyses do not distinguish between license types, meaning that any license acquisition is taken into account, without dividing the analyses by license category.

The reason for this choice is that, from 2022 onwards, the Suomisport system provides sufficient coverage at the federation level.

The chosen age group division is based on so-called natural life stages, taking into account the context of licensed sports participation as well as ensuring a sufficiently large participant population in each group. In future versions of the report, the age group division may be adjusted, refined, or simplified.
